"Mexico" Mike Nelson, former editor of Sanborn's Travelog (see below) has written books on Mexican spas, living in Mexico, touring and god-only-knows-what else. Mike is restless and irreverent, and he writes about Mexico with a sharp eye and a self-deprecating sense of humor. He also gets so enthused about Mexico that he tends to drift over the centerline sometimes, but that’s the risks you take on a road trip with Mikey (as he calls himself).

Sanborn's Mexico Travelog by Sanborn's Mexico Insurance, (800) 222-0158. Sanborn's sweetens their insurance policies for Mexico drivers by throwing in a free copy of the looseleaf Mexico Travelog. Designed to guide motorists along Mexico's major highways, the detail is awesome: "VW agency at right and Coca Cola bottling plant at left. Start working your way to right lane." Is the Travelog accurate? “Mostly yes . . . and sometimes no.” The maps and simplified road plans of how to bypass major cities are especially valuable. The RV and campground information is useful but scanty. To get the most out of your road log, take it with a grain of salt.

he King of The Moon
CODO

"A good novel about Mexico is about as rare as a blue-eyed iguana" Many aspiring novelists feel compelled to exaggerate Méxicoæwhich is unfortunate because the ‘real’ Mexico and ‘real’ Mexicans are far more fascinating than a Mexico depicted by a runaway imagination.
In a nutshell, within three hundred forty two pages of "The King of The Moon", Mr. Kira constructs an utterly believable saga about life in a remote Baja fish camp in the middle third of this century. The characters are complex and the dangers formidable as the pangueros and their families go about living solely at the whim of the elements. Much to his credit, Gene avoids stereotyping Differences in culture and customs are presented to the reader at face value.
By the second chapter, I was ‘hooked’ æ the humor is absolutamente Méxicano, and screamingly funny. Halfway through the next chapter, I realized that I was on an emotional roller coaster, and could not get off until "The End".
Although King of The Moon has been on bookshelves for a little over a year, I feel that Kira’s first novel has achieved the status of a classic work. "King Of The Moon" is on a par with Ray Cannon, John Steinbeck, and Erle Stanley Gardner (!)
I am indeed pleased to give ‘King Of The Moon’ a (very rare) "Buy it and don’t loan it out!" recommendation. [229 words]
