La Fogata.... a restaurant just a few doors off the main plaza, across from the Alsuper supermercado. The exterior of this place is very unassuming. I've eaten here often and haven't yet been disappointed. The menu runs heavily to meat, but there's an excellent vegetarian taco dish, as well as side orders of baked and stuffed potatoes, and other good things. If you like steak, however, and can handle moderately spicy chilie, I highly recommend "arrachera en adobo". I order it "medio termino" (medium rare) and add a baked potato on the side. If you prefer your steak rare, ask for "tres cuartos".
Estrella Blanca buses to the Las Estrellas intersection near Basaseachic and the vifllage of Basaseachic leave Cuauhtemoc at 0800, 1240, and 1640.
La Esquina cafe: about 4 blocks downhill from Los Cumbres Inn, is said to open very early.
Recommended: Los Alambres Tacos: Avenida Rayon #6, between Melgar y 2.
Hotel Los Arenales at Aldama and Melgar is 200p, with parking. (suggested by Cathy Waterman)
Motel Tarahumara Inn, Av. Allende Y Calle 5a. tel: 91-158 / 1-19-19
The Tarahumara Inn is a good place for an early breakfast, but I've been told by a local that their lunches and dinners are just "so-so".
Pizzeria Los Arcos is owned by Mennonite elder Abraham Schmitt. Located very near the Mennonite RV park, on the highway to Obregon, about 4.5 km from the intersection of the Cuauhtemoc highway.
Car repair and storage: Eustacio Arviso has Servicio Bulevar, a very large shop on the outskirts of the city. As you enter the edge of the city from Creel, go past Bital bank and look for the shop on the right, near (just past) the Mennonite statue. Eustacio has a very good reputation. If you are thinking of leaving your vehicle somewhere while you take the Copper Canyon train, Eustacio has a secure storage area.
Train depot: on the lower side of town. Look for a huge Coca Cola sign painted on the side of an enormous concrete silo, next to a very tall antenna.
Mennonites do not work from noon on Saturday through Sunday. If you're driving in or out of Cuauhtemoc and need gasoline, take this into account, as the gas stations on the Obregon highway are Mennonite, and will be closed.
